Spurs’ final pre-season friendly takes place in the Israeli city of Haifa tonight. Antonio Conte’s side are unbeaten throughout an encouraging summer so far, thrashing a K-League XI in South Korea before drawing with Sevilla and overcoming Rangers at Ibrox.
Now Tottenham’s players have one final chance to make their mark ahead of next weekend, when they open the new Premier League campaign with a home clash against Southampton. Looking to wreck their preparations for 2022/23 this evening is a Roma outfit coached by former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho and now boasting Argentine marksman Paulo Dybala.
The Giallorossi had to make do with a sixth-place finish in Serie A last term, but celebrated winning the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League title in Tirana. Roma began their pre-season schedule with wins over Sunderland and Portimonense, followed by defeat to Sporting Lisbon and a hard-fought draw with nice. HT: Tottenham 0-1 Roma
Roma lead at the break through Ibanez’s header, which was probably deserved after they made a quick start to the match.
Spurs on top since then and a few nice moves, both they’ve been mostly limited to shots from distance.
45 mins: Two minutes added on at the end of the half.
Looks like Mourinho’s side will take a slender lead into the changing rooms.
43 mins: Spurs pinning Roma back. Played back to Dier who whips a great first-time cross into the box.
Son makes the run across his man to the near post, ball just over his head though. Anything on that and it’s probably 1-1.
41 mins: Kane drops deep to get on the ball, as Bissouma plays it in to his striker.
Turns, onto his left foot and looks to curl an effort into the top corner. Over the bar. Spurs continue to shoot on sight but it’s not causing Roma too many problems.
38 mins: Kane has the ball in the back of the net but the offside flag is up.
Right decision too, just about. Ball was cut back to him, confident finish as you’d expect from Kane but there was an offside in the build-up.
36 mins: Son lays it wide to Perisic, he has Sanchez on the overlap but uses him as a decoy.
Left-footed striker drilled towards the far corner, flies wide. Patricio wasn’t fully sure if that was sneaking in or not.
34 mins: Perisic the latest Spurs player to try his luck from miles out. Catches it sweetly, but always rising over the bar.
Tottenham need a bit more patience, no need to go for goal every time they can see the goalkeeper.
32 mins: So then, work for Spurs to do.
Son tries to do that all by himself, going for the goal from about 35 yards out. Shot makes it five of those before it’s blocked.
GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 Roma | Roger Ibanez 29′
Great block from Sanchez. Abraham was away and driving into the box, fired a left-footed shot at goal but Sanchez slides in and gets his body in the way. Behind for a corner.
Swung in and headed home by Ibanez! Not the best defending from Spurs, he had a run at it and powered the header past Lloris.
27 mins: Brief pause, both sets of players over to the touchline for some water and instructions.
Back underway now – Spurs certainly on top before that stoppage.
