Community Shield LIVE: Liverpool vs Man City latest score and goal updates as Erling Haaland starts

Premier League preview: Who are the title favorites and who has relegation worries?

Liverpool face Manchester City in the Community Shield final at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium, as Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola renew their rivalry in the traditional season curtain-raiser. The first silverware of the campaign will be lifted as the Premier League champions and FA Cup winner clash, and with Liverpool and Manchester City involved it is set to be another enthralling meeting.

The sides could barely be separated last season, but it was Guardiola’s City who edged a titanic title race by a single point – thanks to a dramatic comeback against Aston Villa on the final day of the season. Liverpool defeated City on their way to winning the FA Cup, which added to their Carabao Cup triumph, but the disappointment of missing out on the Premier League was compounded after Klopp’s Reds were beaten in the Champions League final in Paris.

With the new Premier League campaign just a week away, both teams are still in pre-season mode after a significant summer of change at both clubs. It is indeed the start of a new era with both Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez set to make their competitive debuts after big-money moves this transfer window. City have also lost Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus while Liverpool have seen Sadio Mane depart.

But when these teams meet there are usually fireworks, and there is extra incentive for Liverpool after they were beaten by City in the 2019 Community Shield final. It has been 16 years since they last lifted this trophy. Follow live updates from the Community Shield final, below:

Ian Wright thinks Haaland should have headed the cross from Cancelo, which he instead attempted to volley with his right foot. Both Wright and Keane are very impressed with his performance so far.

Just the eight touches so far for Haaland – you can hear the hot takes being prepared on the statistic alone. But should we be surprised by that? City want him to be their penalty box striker and he had two chances in the box. It will come.

HT: Liverpool 1-0 Man City

Well that flew by. Liverpool and Manchester City have wasted no time in picking up where they left off from last season. That was a proper fight, as Jurgen Klopp might say, and I don’t remember too many Community Shield finals in recent years that have matched its intensity.

Liverpool were excellent in the first 25 minutes and although Alexander-Arnold’s shot too a deflection off Ake, it was a deserved lead. City then had their spell but Haaland did not see much of the ball. He did get two chances, however, but couldn’t get a connection on a cross from Cancelo.

HALF-TIME: Liverpool 1-0 Man City

Liverpool had a final attack before the break with Salah getting loose down the right. He looked for Diaz with a cross but Ederson leapt to collect it.

43 mins: City have been well on top over the past 10 or 15 minutes, but have lacked the sharpness of Liverpool showed in their dominant spell earlier on.

Liverpool 1-0 Man City

41 mins: Mahrez threatens again dribbling in from the right, before crashing into Thiago. He goes down and City want a penalty, but nothing is given.

Liverpool are meanwhile upset about a high boot from Cancelo on Alexander-Arnold. He caught him, but there was nothing more serious than that.

Liverpool 1-0 Man City

38 mins: Another City chance! City work it out to Mahrez, who finds an once of space to get a shot in on his left foot. It’s straight at Adrian.

Liverpool 1-0 Man City

36 mins: Another good moment for City as Cancelo gets down the left. His cross looks set for Haaland but Van Dijk gets across. Mahrez then threatens in the box but Robertson blocks, as De Bruyne’s cross then goes wide.

Liverpool 1-0 Man City

33 mins: Chance for Haaland! City break and a forward pass is brought down. Robertson does enough to challenge him and he’s falling as he shoots on target.

He then attempts a flying volley from Bernardo’s cross, but can’t get a proper touch and it goes over!
